In 2006, in Indianapolis, Scott Newman — a former Marion County prosecutor diagnosed with Parkinson's at 40 — began training in boxing with his friend Vince Perez, a former Golden Gloves fighter. Within months his balance, flexibility and grip strength had improved and his tremors had receded. With world champion Kristy Rose Follmar the two men founded Rock Steady Boxing, a non-contact boxing programme for people with Parkinson's. It now runs in more than 900 affiliated gyms and has worked with over 50,000 people.
